it seems Apple is building their own self-driving car

Is Apple building their own self-driving car? We can’t say for sure if that is true, but what is true is Apple’s interest in the technology. Recently California’s DMV granted Apple approval to test self-driving cars on California’s roads, and now thanks to internal documents obtained by Business Insider, we are getting a glimpse at the technology behind Apple’s efforts.

The documents obtained by Business Insider in question include “Development Platform Specific Training” as well as details about a self-driving car system titled “Apple Automated System”. The image above was part of the documents and describes how the setup includes the use of a Logitech wheel and pedals to actuate drive by wire.

 The document also talks about training drivers to test the system, which is mandated under California law, and it seems that drivers must pass seven tests before they can be considered fully trained. Each driver will be given two practice runs and three trials to pass each test which will be conducted on a private course.

Now last we heard, Apple had given up on building their own car and could be choosing to focus on the software side of things instead. These documents and the permit does confirm that Apple is still interested in the tech, although exactly to what degree remains to be seen. After all many companies work on projects that don’t necessarily become a commercialized product, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
